Frozen Sangria Wine Slushies

These refreshing, frozen sangria wine slushies are made with a red wine, peach and strawberry, and blended with orange juice and triple sec for some added sweetness.

Obviously, we love a good sangria recipe around here. They’re perfect for summer, and the combinations are endless. I love them all, from traditional sangria to apple cider sangria, but these frozen sangria wine slushies are quite possibly the ultimate summer drink.

I literally freeze sweet red wine – I normally use pinot noir or tempranillo – and blend it with frozen fruit until they’re ice cold and perfectly smooth, like any blended cocktail should be.

It really doesn’t get much better. I mean, their definitely tied with an ice cold margarita, right?

Here’s what you’ll need to make them

  • Ice cube tray
  • High speed blender
  • Liquid measuring cup
  • Wine glasses, or any cocktail glass you like

How to make frozen sangria

Freeze the wine. Fill 1 ice cube tray with wine and chill the rest of the bottle in the fridge overnight.

Blend your wine slushies. Add the frozen wine to your blender with about 2 – 3 cups of frozen fruit, some orange juice, orange liqueur, and agave nectar.

The added sweetener is optional here, but recommended because the cold inhibits sweetness. Pour in the remaining wine and blend until smooth.

Garnish and serve. Pour the wine slushies into 6 glasses (or however many you’re serving. Add an orange slices and serve immediately.

If you don’t finish the full batch: You can get away with storing these in the fridge for later, but they will loose a bit of their frozen texture. It’s not ideal, but I suggest popping an ice cube or two into your glass if you’re driving leftovers.

FAQS and tips for making wine slushies

Can you freeze wine?

Yes. Because it has a lower alcohol content than liquor, it will freeze. I wouldn’t recommend freezing wine for storage purposes alone, but for blended recipes like this one, it’s perfect.

Does freezing wine affect alcohol content?

No. Freezing wine doesn’t affect it’s alcohol content. Wine will still contain the same amount of alcohol wether it’s frozen or not.

What can I mix with wine to make it sweeter?

Agave nectar, or simple syrup, will sweeten wine. I’ve used agave nectar in this recipe because it doesn’t seize up when it’s cold like honey does, and it’s also vegan-friendly. If you want to make simple syrup, that will work too.

  1. Instead of sweetening the mix, or wine, I use a sweet red, like Riunite, or Roscato. A few frozen peach slices does not hurt either 🙂
